Channel 4 Looking for Families

For those of you who missed out on the X Factor this year - why not try this.....

Hallo there,

I hope you don't mind me contacting you out of the blue. My name is Katy and I work for Twofour, a television production company based in London. We are currently developing a documentary series for Channel 4 about family life in Britain in 2012 and we're looking for warm, engaging and outgoing families who might be interested in taking part. I wanted to drop you a line, as I thought your club might be a great place to find the kind families we are looking for.

We are hoping to make a landmark series about what life is really like for British families in this iconic year and are looking for six vibrant families from different backgrounds and regions to film with throughout this summer. Our search for families is very broad, but we are looking for a family with at least two children still living at home- other than that, absolutely anything and everyone goes! At this stage, we would like to speak to as many people as possible - all our conversations are confidential and do not commit people to be involved.
It would be great if you could help us in any way by circulating the flyer, which I have attached, perhaps via a newsletter, mailing list, Facebook or just by mentioning it to people to see if anyone might be interested in having a chat with us.
If you can think of anyone at the club who might be interested in taking part in this series, please send them our contacts or give me a call directly and we can chat further. We would always need parental consent before talking to those under 18.
Please feel free to give me a call anytime or pass my number to anyone you think might like to have a chat - 0207 438 1804.

Thanks again for your help and I look forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes
Katy McClellan

I've emailed the RYA today to point out that our club is in Brightlingsea, not Colchester as it states on its website publicity for the Our Olympic and Paralympic sailing heritage Exhibition which is heading our way in September. Anyone else fancy doing the same?

Since we advertised about our try it day on the 7th July we have had many enquiries from people who want to try sailing. We are doing this without charge so are looking for volunteers to help for the day. It runs from 10 till 4:00, our Regatta is in the afternoon so maybe you can help in the morning. The club will provide coffee and the boats and people are booking 30min slots. If you feel you can help even if only for an hour please let me know. This will be a great opportunity for the club to show families how enjoyable our sport is, we have booked the weather (fingers crossed) and a high tide in the afternoon!

Bines Worth Trophy Report

Keith Nevill

The Bines Worth Trophy started in chaotic fashion on Sunday, as twenty-nine dinghies and catamarans tried to beat their way out of the creek only an hour or so after low water. There were numerous near misses and several dinghies ran aground as they struggled in the light winds. Shaun Seear and Stuart Curtis got bored and gave up before the gate. The rest of the fleet split up looking for clean air, and the dinghies that stuck to the St Osyth shore found it first as the wind filled in from the south.
Elaine and Warren Tudor were in the first Fireball out of the creek and they quickly pulled away from the others, with only Emma Barry and Roger Etherington managing to stay in contention. Jonathan Cooper and Cheryl Jessop stayed at the front of the chasing pack and the best racing was further back between Barry and Rose Winship and Oz and Drostan O’Reilly. These two battled it out all round the course, overtaking and cutting inside each other, but in the end the heavier pair of Oz and Drostan were able to keep ahead after sailing over the top of Barry and Rose. At the front Emma and Roger managed to close to within ten seconds of Elaine and Warren but were unable to get by.
Super-star new boy Adam Jones got off to the best start among the Lasers but lost his lead by going too far out in to the tide. Gary Pilgrim and a few other Laser sailors stayed in the shallower water by St Osyth shore, caught the building wind first and shot ahead. Gary worked hard to extend his lead and kept well ahead of the others, with Tony Morgan closing the gap on the second lap as Gary struggled in the strengthening winds. Ian Newman, in his first outing of the year, managed to get past Stevo Williams to take third place, with Mike Hare, Richard Pearson and Steve Carr bringing up the rear.
There were only two entries from the Merlin Rocket fleet, but nonetheless they had a very tight race with Andy Bines and Sean Sutton managing to keep up with Dan Willett and Pete Nicholson until the last run in from number 8, when Dan and Pete powered away. Three BODs also took part but unfortunately all the people sailing them left the bar before I had a chance to talk to them, so here goes: BOD 11 retired and BOD 18 beat BOD 53 by a minute and thirty-one seconds.
Finally, congratulations to John Payne and Matt Hunt, sailing in the only catamaran on the water, who won the race by a margin of over eighteen minutes.
Results (after handicap):
1st: John Payne and Matt Hunt (F18)
2nd: Dan Willett and Pete Nicholson (Merlin Rocket)
3rd: Ben Clegg (Musto Skiff)

2nd May Mugs report

Keith Nevill

The weather was finally kind on Saturday, with warm sunshine, blue skies and a shifty force two to three northerly wind greeting the fifteen dinghies which entered the 2nd May Mugs race. All the complaining from the Laser fleet had finally paid off and they were given their own start, leaving the Fireballs, fast handicaps and a lone Merlin (Oz and Martina) to get going first. The start was quite eventful with yours truly water-skiing down the creek like a hippo after failing to spot that we’d sailed into some dirty air, and Brian and Claire Allen threatening to capsize on top of Richard Mansfield and Jo Adams, whom they had trapped against the shore. In the meantime Ben Clegg had shot out of the creek in his Musto Skiff, followed by Oz and Martina and Barry and Rose Winship in their Fireball. Richard and Jo finally escaped from the Allens and headed over to the Mersea shore, where they got a lift which took them ahead of Barry and Rose. Ben Clegg pulled away as the race went on leaving Oz and Martina and the leading Fireballs to fight amongst themselves, with Peter Smurthwaite and me further back having a tight race with Steve Carr in his Vortex. Barry and Rose finally managed to get past Richard and Jo at Mersea Wreck and stayed ahead round the second lap, but they were unable to catch Oz and Martina.
The Lasers in the meantime where enjoying their own race without the inconvenience of being swamped by larger spinnaker flying dinghies. Tim Ashworth and Stevo Williams were leading at the first mark, but they were gradually reeled in and overtaken by Adam Jones. Richard Herbert and Tony Morgan worked hard to keep in touch and at the turning mark there was only twenty seconds between the first five Lasers. However, Tim had to take drastic action to avoid colliding with Richard and ended up hitting the turning mark. Tim was initially reluctant to do his penalty turn as he thought it was all Richard’s fault, but realised he had no choice when he remembered that footage from his on-board camera would give him away in the bar. Adam continued to pull away on the second lap leaving Stevo and Richard to argue over an incident at one of the marks, with Stevo claiming that Richard had called for water when he was about four boat lengths behind and Richard claiming that Stevo had tacked too aggressively. Tony “went off on a flier like a headless chicken”, gambled on a windshift that never came, and then sat bobbing around in a dead zone.
Results (by fleet):
1st Fireball – Barry and Rose Winship
1st Fast Handicap – Ben Clegg
1st Laser – Adam Jones
1st Merlin Rocket – Oz and Martina Barry
1st Slow Handicap – Andy and Rebecca Bines

Deputies Cup race reports

The three races of the deputy cup were held on Sunday and Monday of the bank holiday weekend, with two races held on the Monday. All the races were started from the committee boat, and Alan Hicks and Craig and Jane Bond did a great job in very tricky conditions.
Race 1
Nineteen dinghies and catamarans entered the first race including two new members, Simon Farthing and Stuart Snell, both sailing Sprint 15s. The race featured an unusually high number of errors including Ian Gibbs’ inability to put his wetsuit on the right way round, dinghies sailing to the wrong marks and dinghies not crossing the line on the second and third laps.
Tony Morgan was running late and struggled to make the line due to the strong tides. Adrian Green started well and pulled away when most of the Lasers behind him got headed; all except for Tony who had tacked off to the opposite shore and rapidly made up the time he’d given away. Tony then get involved in a duel with Adam Jones which lasted for most of the race, until Adam realised that he’d failed to cross the line on the third lap and retired.
The Fireball fleet had a good tussle, with Elaine and Warren Tudor making the best start and leading for most of the time. Unfortunately they lost their way on the final lap, went too high of Point Clear and allowed Ian and Penny Gibbs to get ahead of them.
The two new boys gave Gordon Deuce a hard race with the three Sprint 15s finishing in twelfth, thirteenth and fourteenth places. It wasn’t a great day for the fast handicaps, with both the Cherub and the 505 finishing down the fleet.
Results:
1st: Adrian Green (Laser)
2nd: Penny and Ian Gibbs (Fireball)
3rd: Tony Morgan (Laser)
Race 2
Race 2 got under way in a force two to three breeze from the south east and an incoming tide. Mike Bees and Martin Worth got away well in their B14, as did Dan Willett and Pete Nicholson (Merlin) and Barry and Rose Winship (Fireball). Bees and Worth then lost their lead by running aground at second beach and had to capsize to free their dagger board. Willett and Nicholson also had a few sandbank issues and allowed Piers Lambert and Tim Bees to get past them. Lambert and Bees held the lead until the next beat, when Willett and Nicholson either: a) “found” clean air after being forced to tack off by a Fireball, or; b) played the wind shifts beautifully, and re-took the lead. The Winships sailed well for two laps and held off Penny and Ian Gibbs and Oz and Drostan O’Reilly. However, disaster struck at the last mark of the second lap when a badly timed spinnaker drop resulted in the kite disappearing beneath the front of the boat. The WInships were halfway to Creekmouth before they got themselves sorted out, with Penny and Ian and Oz and Drostan out of sight in the distance.
Adam Jones led the Lasers for most of the race with Gary Pilgrim in close attendance. The lead changed hands twice on the last lap, with Adam keeping in front after getting ahead again on the last beat. Fleet captain Stevo Williams was left behind at the start after getting caught in dirty wind, but worked hard to get back in touch with the chasing pair of Richard Pearson (in his breakthrough race), and Tim Ashworth. These three couldn’t catch Adam and Gary, but they had a great race nonetheless, changing places all around the course with Stevo finally securing third spot.
Results:
1st: Chris and Gill Jordan (Laser 2000)
2nd: Penny and Ian Gibbs (Fireball)
3rd: Graham and Eddie Bridle (Cherub)
Race 3
The last race of the series took place in a blustery force four to five wind and choppy waters. The Lasers in particular had a difficult afternoon with the waves causing trouble on the runs. Adam Jones for once had a race to forget, hitting the leeward mark and capsizing after performing his penalty turn, and then falling off at the windward mark. Richard Herbert and Tony Morgan scrapped for second place with Richard pulling away on the beats and Tony closing up downwind. Simon “Redbeard” Redfearn, sailing for the first time in three years, took fourth place. The star of the race though was Will Sunnucks, who got away by starting from the pin end of the line and led all the way round despite sailing with a broken tiller extension.
The Fireballs made the most of the conditions with all the trapezing crews working hard to keep the dinghies upright. Ian and Penny Gibbs completed a hat-trick of victories in the Fireball fleet by getting away at the start and keeping ahead of Elaine and Warren Tudor and Richard Mansfield and Dawn Jasper. Emma Barry and Roger Etherington were effectively out of the race at the start after getting tangled with a Topaz 14.
The conditions didn’t suit the Merlins and for once they were unable to keep up with the leading Fireballs. Andy and Sarah Bines retired after losing touch with the rest of the fleet, along with Mike Bees and Martin Worth who ripped their B14’s spinnaker.
Results:
1st: Penny and Ian Gibbs (Fireball)
2nd: Dan Willett & Pete Nicholson (Merlin)
3rd: Graham and Eddie Bridle (Cherub)
Overall Results:
1st: Chris and Gill Jordan (Laser 2000)
2nd: Penny and Ian Gibbs (Fireball)
3rd: Dan Willett and Pete Nicholson (Merlin)

1st May Mugs race report

Keith Nevill
Keith Nevill
Posts: 5
The May bank holiday weekend got under way with nineteen dinghies and catamarans lining up for the first May Mugs. The weather was grey and uninviting and the winds were shifting and variable, but the powerful gusts that had been forecast never materialised.
Richard Mansfield and Kathy Chabo had a tight race with Barry and Rose Winship in the Fireballs, with a couple of clowns in the third Fireball a long way in the distance. Mansfield and Chabo made the best start but were overtaken by the Winships on the first beat to Mersea Wreck. The Winships held the lead until they overshot Big Buoy while dropping their spinnaker, and allowed Richard and Kathy to cut inside. The Winships kept in touch until the end of the first lap when Richard and Kathy lengthened their lead.
Piers Lambert and Tim Bees got away from the other Merlins at the start, leaving Oz and Martina Barry to race Dave and Celia Charlton to be second Merlin. Oz and Martina held the Charltons at bay for the first lap but were eventually overhauled and, despite closing up to them on the run to Hills, couldn’t get by them again.
The race amongst the Lasers became something of a procession after an eventful first lap. Adam Jones had a close battle with Stevo Williams, and the two of them had a coming together at a mark about two-thirds of the way round the course. Stevo barged Adam onto the mark (and then hit the mark himself) and had to do a 720 penalty turn, leaving Adam to do quick 360 turn and scoot off to take first place. Nigel Edmunds started well but gradually fell back three places as the race went on, something he attributed to the combined age of him and his Laser being about ninety-five.

And when it's a good idea...

"YACHT SKIPPER DEATH IN SWANAGE BAY
Following an overnight search of Swanage Bay, a yacht skipper was found
in the sea but later declared deceased after setting out for shore from
a yacht in a tender.
At 11.46pm on Wednesday night, Portland Coastguard received a 999 call
from crew members of the 47 foot sailing yacht Musketeer of Stutton who
were on the beach at Studland awaiting the skipper of Musketeer to
return them to the vessel by inflatable dinghy after an evening ashore.
They reported that the dinghy had not returned after earlier
transferring some other crew members back to the yacht. They were
concerned that the outboard engine may have broken down and the tender
with the skipper on board was now drifting across Poole Bay.
Swanage RNLI All Weather and Inshore Lifeboats, the Coastguard Rescue
Helicopter from Lee on Solent, Swanage & Poole Coastguard Rescue Teams
and Dorset Police searched along the shoreline and the water in Poole
and Studland Bays.  An upturned inflatable dinghy was found marked with
the name Musketeer and shortly afterwards, the man was found
unconscious in the water without a lifejacket.
He was recovered to the lifeboat then airlifted by the Coastguard
rescue helicopter to Poole helicopter landing site to be met by Dorset
Police, Poole Coastguard Rescue Officers and South West Ambulance who
transferred him to hospital. Despite attempts to resuscitate him, the
man could not be revived. Swanage RNLI Lifeboat assisted the remaining
crew to return the yacht back to Poole Harbour.
Maddy Davey, Portland Coastguard Watch Manager said,
"We would like to express our deepest sympathy for the family and
friends of the deceased at this difficult time.  As summer approaches
we want all boat users to keep safe when heading out on the water.
Please wear your lifejacket on deck and when you are on a tender
because sadly, these tragic accidents do happen even on short trips.” "
